The Five Nouns and Their Grammar
The five nouns are special nouns in Arabic grammar that take distinctive case endings.
Definition
The five nouns are: father brother father-in-law owner and mouth. They are special because they use letters rather than short vowels for case endings.
Case Endings
Nominative: with waw. Accusative: with alif. Genitive: with ya. Examples: his father came. I saw his father. I passed by his father.
Conditions
They must be: singular attached to a pronoun not in diminutive form.
Exercises
Analyze: 1) Your brother came. 2) I honored your brother. 3) I passed by your brother.
