The Imperative: Form and Uses
The imperative is used to give orders, instructions, advice, or make requests. It is formed using the base form of the verb.
Affirmative imperative
Use the base verb: Close the door. Open your book. Be quiet. Listen carefully.
Negative imperative
Use Don’t + base verb: Don’t run. Don’t be late. Don’t forget your homework.
Polite requests
Add “please”: Please sit down. Close the door, please. Use “Let’s” for suggestions: Let’s go to the park.
Common uses
- Orders: Stop! Go away!
- Instructions: Mix the flour and eggs. Bake for 30 minutes.
- Advice: Eat healthy food. Exercise regularly.
- Requests: Please help me.
