English – Present Continuous for Future Arrangements – BAC Literary Stream
The present continuous is not only used for actions happening now. It is also commonly used to talk about fixed future plans and arrangements. This is an important distinction for the BAC exam.
Present Continuous for Future:
Use the present continuous (am/is/are + verb-ing) to talk about future arrangements with other people, especially when the time and place have been decided.
Examples: “I am meeting my friends tomorrow evening.” / “She is flying to London next week.” / “They are having a party on Saturday.”
Present Continuous vs Will vs Going to:
- Present Continuous: Fixed arrangements. “I am seeing the dentist at 3 pm.” (appointment made)
- Going to: Intentions/plans. “I am going to study medicine.” (intention, not necessarily arranged)
- Will: Spontaneous decisions/predictions. “I’ll help you!” (spontaneous) / “I think it will rain.” (prediction)
Signal Words for Future Arrangements:
- Tomorrow, next week/month/year, tonight, this weekend
- On Monday, in June, at 5 o’clock
- This evening, next Friday, in the summer
Present Simple for Scheduled Events:
Use the present simple for timetables and scheduled events (timetable future).
Examples: “The train leaves at 7 am.” / “The exam starts at 9 o’clock.” / “The shop opens at 8 am.”
Comparison:
- “I am going to the cinema tonight.” (arrangement with someone)
