English – Asking for and Giving Opinions – BAC Literary Stream
Expressing opinions is a crucial skill for the BAC exam, especially for the writing section where you need to present and defend your point of view.
Asking for Opinions:
- “What do you think about…?”
- “What’s your opinion on…?”
- “How do you feel about…?”
- “Do you agree that…?”
- “What are your views on…?”
- “Would you say that…?”
- “Don’t you think that…?”
Giving Opinions:
Strong opinion: “I’m convinced that…” / “I strongly believe that…” / “I have no doubt that…” / “It’s obvious that…”
Neutral opinion: “I think that…” / “In my opinion, …” / “As far as I’m concerned, …” / “It seems to me that…” / “I’d say that…”
Hesitant opinion: “I’m not sure, but I think…” / “Perhaps it’s true that…” / “I may be wrong, but…” / “It could be argued that…”
Agreeing:
- Strong agreement: “I completely agree.” / “Exactly!” / “You’re absolutely right.” / “I couldn’t agree more.”
- Partial agreement: “I agree up to a point, but…” / “That’s true to some extent, however…” / “I see what you mean, but…”
- Simple agreement: “I agree.” / “That’s right.” / “You’re right.” / “I think so too.”
Disagreeing:
- Polite disagreement: “I see things differently.” / “I’m not sure I agree.” / “With all due respect…” / “I don’t mean to disagree, but…”
- Strong disagreement: “I disagree entirely.” / “I don’t agree at all.” / “That’s not true.” / “You can’t be serious!”
Example Essay Paragraph (BAC):
“In my opinion, social media has both positive and negative effects on young people. On the one hand, it helps them stay connected with friends and access information. On the other hand, it can be addictive and affect their mental health. I believe that the key is to use it wisely and in moderation. As far as I’m concerned, parents should guide their children in using social media responsibly.”
