The Industrial Revolution began in Britain in the late 18th century and transformed the world forever. It marked a shift from manual labour and animal-based agriculture to machine-based manufacturing. This period saw the invention of the steam engine, the spinning jenny, and the power loom, which revolutionised textile production.
Factories grew rapidly, attracting thousands of workers from rural areas to urban centres. Cities expanded and new social classes emerged: the industrial bourgeoisie (factory owners) and the industrial proletariat (workers). Working conditions were often harsh, with long hours, low wages, and child labour. This led to the rise of trade unions and labour movements demanding better rights.
In the 20th century, the digital revolution brought new changes. Computers, the internet, and artificial intelligence are now reshaping economies and societies. The impact of these technological revolutions – industrial and digital – continues to influence our daily lives, from how we work and communicate to how we learn and entertain ourselves.
