Read the text carefully then do the activities.
Algeria has a long and rich history of cultural diversity. From the ancient Berber kingdoms to the Roman, Ottoman and French periods, Algeria has always been a crossroads of civilisations. After independence in 1962, the country has strived to build its own identity while preserving this multicultural heritage.
The Algerian family is the cornerstone of society. Traditionally, families were extended and patriarchal, with several generations living under the same roof. However, modernisation, urbanisation and economic changes have transformed the family structure. Today, the nuclear family is becoming more common, especially in large cities like Algiers, Oran and Constantine.
Despite these changes, some values remain constant: respect for elders, solidarity among family members, and the importance of religious and national celebrations. The Algerian diaspora, estimated at more than 5 million people, maintains strong ties with the homeland and contributes to the country economy through remittances and investments.
