Giving Directions: Vocabulary and Phrases
Places in town
the supermarket, the post office, the bank, the hospital, the pharmacy, the mosque, the school, the library, the bus station, the police station, the restaurant, the park.
Asking for directions
- “Excuse me, where is the …?”
- “Excuse me, how do I get to …?”
- “Is there a … near here?”
- “Can you tell me the way to …?”
Giving directions
- “Turn left.” / “Turn right.”
- “Go straight ahead.”
- “It’s on your left/right.”
- “Take the first/second street on the left.”
- “Go past the …”
- “Cross the street.”
- “It’s next to the …” / “It’s opposite the …”
- “It’s between the … and the …”
- “It’s at the corner of … street.”
Example dialogue
A: Excuse me, is there a pharmacy near here?
B: Yes, go straight ahead, then turn left at the corner. It’s next to the supermarket, on your right.
A: Thank you!
B: You’re welcome.
