Comparatives and Superlatives

Comparative adjectives compare two things. Superlative adjectives compare three or more.

Comparative

One-syllable: add -er (tall → taller). Two-syllables ending in -y: change y to i + er (happy → happier). Two+ syllables: more + adj (more beautiful). Irregular: good → better, bad → worse, far → farther/further.

Superlative

One-syllable: the + -est (the tallest). Two-syllables ending in -y: the + iest (the happiest). Two+ syllables: the most + adj (the most beautiful). Irregular: the best, the worst, the farthest/furthest.

Exercises

1. Form comparative and superlative: (tall – happy – difficult – good – bad).
2. Fill: (She is … (tall) than me – He is … (smart) student in class).
3. Write 5 comparative and 5 superlative sentences.
