English – There is, There are: Usage and Practice – BAC Literary Stream
The structure “there is/there are” is used to describe the existence of something. It is one of the most common structures in English and is essential for describing places and situations in the BAC exam.
Basic Usage:
- There is + singular/uncountable noun: “There is a book on the table.” / “There is some milk in the fridge.”
- There are + plural noun: “There are many students in the classroom.” / “There are two cats in the garden.”
Negative Form:
- There isn’t (is not): “There isn’t any water left.”
- There aren’t (are not): “There aren’t any chairs in the room.”
- There is no / There are no: “There is no time to waste.” / “There are no easy answers.”
Question Form:
- “Is there a bank near here?” – “Yes, there is. / No, there isn’t.”
- “Are there any restaurants in this area?” – “Yes, there are. / No, there aren’t.”
- “How many students are there in your class?”
Quantifiers with There is/are:
- There is + a lot of / lots of / some / a little / a bit of
- There are + a lot of / lots of / some / a few / many / several
- “There are a few problems to solve.” / “There is a little hope.”
Tenses:
- Present: “There is/are…”
- Past: “There was/were…” – “There was a storm last night.” / “There were many people at the party.”
- Present Perfect: “There has been/have been…” – “There has been an accident.” / “There have been some changes.”
- Future: “There will be…” – “There will be a ceremony tomorrow.”
- Modal: “There must be / can be / should be…” – “There should be a solution.”
Common Expressions with There:
- “There is no doubt that…” (لا شك)
- “There is no need to…” (لا حاجة)
- “There is no point in…” (لا فائدة)
- “There is a possibility that…” (هناك احتمال)
- “There is nothing to worry about.” (لا شيء يستدعي القلق)
