English – Giving Directions and Locations – BAC Literary Stream
Being able to give and understand directions is an important communicative skill. In the BAC exam, this can appear in listening comprehension or writing tasks.
Asking for Directions:
- “Excuse me, how do I get to the post office?”
- “Could you tell me the way to the museum?”
- “Is there a bank near here?”
- “Where is the nearest hospital?”
- “Can you show me on the map?”
- “How far is it from here?”
Giving Directions:
- Go/Walk: “Go straight ahead.” / “Walk down this street.” / “Go past the school.”
- Turn: “Turn left at the traffic lights.” / “Turn right after the mosque.”
- Take: “Take the first street on the left.” / “Take the second exit at the roundabout.”
- Cross: “Cross the bridge.” / “Cross the main road.”
- Continue: “Continue until you see the pharmacy.” / “Keep going for about 200 metres.”
Prepositions of Location:
- At: specific point. “It’s at the end of the street.”
- On: surface/street. “It’s on Avenue Benbadis.” / “It’s on your right.”
- In: enclosed area. “It’s in the city centre.” / “It’s in front of the park.”
- Next to / Beside: adjacent. “The bank is next to the supermarket.”
- Opposite / Across from: facing. “The cinema is opposite the restaurant.”
- Between: in the middle. “The café is between the library and the post office.”
- Behind: at the back. “The garden is behind the house.”
- Near / Close to: “The hotel is near the beach.”
- Corner of: “It’s on the corner of Rue Didouche and Boulevard Zighout.”
Example Dialogue:
A: “Excuse me, could you tell me how to get to the nearest pharmacy?”
B: “Of course. Go straight ahead for about 200 metres. Then turn left at the traffic lights. The pharmacy is on your right, next to the bakery.”
A: “Is it far from here?”
B: “No, it’s only about a five-minute walk.”
A: “Thank you very much!”
B: “You’re welcome.”
