English — So/Such … That: Expressing Cause and Result — 2nd Year — Literary Stream
The structures ‘so…that’ and ‘such…that’ express a cause and its result or consequence.
So + Adjective/Adverb + That
“The exam was so difficult that nobody passed.” (cause: difficult exam, result: nobody passed). “He runs so fast that nobody can catch him.”
So + Many/Much/Few/Little + Noun + That
“There were so many people that we couldn’t find a seat.” “He has so much money that he doesn’t know what to do with it.”
Such + (Adjective) + Noun + That
“It was such a hot day that we stayed indoors.” “She is such a kind person that everyone likes her.” “They are such beautiful flowers that I want to buy them all.”
Exercises BAC
Exercise 1 (BAC 2021): Combine: “The movie was boring. I fell asleep.” → “The movie was so boring that I fell asleep.”
Exercise 2 (BAC 2022): Rewrite using ‘such’: “It was a very interesting book. I read it twice.” → “It was such an interesting book that I read it twice.”
Exercise 3: “There were many people. We couldn’t enter.” → “There were so many people that we couldn’t enter.”
Summary
