The Past Perfect Continuous emphasizes the duration of an action that happened before another past action.
Formation
Subject + had + been + verb-ing. Example: “I had been waiting for two hours when she arrived.”
Uses
Duration before something in the past: “They had been traveling for days before they reached the city.” Cause of a past result: “She was tired because she had been working all day.”
Difference from Past Perfect Simple
Past Perfect Simple: “I had written the report.” (completed). Past Perfect Continuous: “I had been writing the report.” (emphasises the process/duration).
BAC Exercise
Exercise 1 (BAC 2022): Complete: “He was exhausted because he (work) all night.” Solution: had been working.
Exercise 2: “When I arrived, they (wait) for over an hour.” Solution: had been waiting.
