1. Introduction

Articles are words that define a noun as specific or unspecific. In English, there are three articles: a, an (indefinite), and the (definite).

2. The Indefinite Article: A / An

Used with singular countable nouns that are mentioned for the first time or are not specific.

When to use “A”:

Before words starting with a consonant sound:\na book, a car, a university (pronounced “yoo-niversity”), a European country

When to use “An”:

Before words starting with a vowel sound:\nan apple, an hour (silent h), an honest man, an umbrella

3. The Definite Article: The

Used when the noun is specific, known, or has been mentioned before.

Uses:

• Specific noun: “The book on the table is mine.”
• Mentioned before: “I saw a dog. The dog was black.”
• Unique things: “the sun, the moon, the Earth”
• Superlatives: “the best, the largest”
• Ordinal numbers: “the first, the second”
• Musical instruments: “play the guitar, play the piano”
• Countries with plural names: “the United States, the UAE”

4. Zero Article (No Article)

No article is used with:\n

• Plural and uncountable nouns (general): “Dogs are loyal.” / “Water is essential.”
• Proper nouns: “I live in Algeria.”
• Meals: “have breakfast, eat lunch”
• Sports and activities: “play football, go swimming”
• Languages and school subjects: “study English, learn Mathematics”
• Transport (with “by”): “travel by bus, go by car”
