English — Making Suggestions and Giving Advice: Let’s, How about, Why don’t, Should — 1st Year — Literary Stream
Making suggestions and giving advice are important communicative skills tested in the BAC exam.
Making Suggestions
Let’s + base verb: “Let’s go to the cinema.” How about/What about + verb-ing: “How about watching a movie?” Why don’t we/you + base verb: “Why don’t we go for a walk?” Shall we + base verb: “Shall we have dinner?” Could/Can: “We could try the new restaurant.”
Giving Advice
You should/ought to + base verb: “You should see a doctor.” You had better + base verb: “You’d better study harder.” If I were you, I would: “If I were you, I would apologize.”
Responding to Suggestions
Accepting: “That’s a good idea.” “Great idea!” “Why not?” Refusing: “I don’t think so.” “I’d rather not.” “That’s a good idea but…”
Exercises BAC
Exercise 1 (BAC 2021): Give advice: “My friend is feeling stressed about exams.” Solution: “You should take breaks and relax.” / “If I were you, I would make a study plan.”
Exercise 2: Make a suggestion: “It’s a beautiful day.” → “How about going for a walk?” / “Let’s go to the park.”
Summary
For suggestions: Let’s, How about, Why don’t. For advice: Should, ought to, had better. The BAC tests these expressions in writing tasks.
