English — Expressing Agreement and Disagreement: So, Neither, Too, Either — 2nd Year — Literary Stream
Knowing how to express agreement and disagreement is essential for conversation and writing.
Agreeing with Positive Statements
So + auxiliary + subject: “I love reading.” “So do I.” Subject + auxiliary + too: “I love reading.” “I do too.”
Agreeing with Negative Statements
Neither/Nor + auxiliary + subject: “I don’t like coffee.” “Neither do I.” Subject + auxiliary + either: “I don’t like coffee.” “I don’t either.”
Disagreeing Politely
“I’m afraid I disagree.” “I see your point but…” “That’s one way to look at it, but…” “I’m not sure about that.”
Exercises BAC
Exercise 1: Agree: “I have finished my homework.” → “So have I.” / “I have too.”
Exercise 2 (BAC 2022): Respond: “I can’t swim.” → “Neither can I.” / “I can’t either.”
Exercise 3: Complete: “She doesn’t eat meat. ___ doesn’t her brother.” → Neither doesn’t? Wait, “Neither does her brother.”
Summary
For agreement: So + aux + I / I + aux + too (positive). Neither + aux + I / I + aux + either (negative). Practice the inversion pattern.
