Past Continuous vs Past Simple
The Past Simple is used for completed actions in the past. The Past Continuous is used for actions in progress at a specific time in the past.
Past Simple
Subject + V2 (past form). I played football yesterday. She watched a film last night. Regular verbs add -ed. Irregular verbs have special forms: go → went, eat → ate, see → saw.
Past Continuous
Subject + was/were + V-ing. I was reading at 8 PM. They were playing when I arrived. Use for: actions in progress at a specific past time, interrupted actions, two parallel actions.
Using Both Together
When one action interrupts another: Past Continuous (long action) + when + Past Simple (short action). Example: I was watching TV when the phone rang. While + Past Continuous, Past Simple. Example: While I was walking home, I met Ali.
