Second and Third Conditionals
Conditionals express hypothetical situations. The second conditional talks about unreal present/future situations. The third conditional talks about unreal past situations.
Second Conditional
If + past simple, would + base verb. Use: unreal or unlikely situations in the present or future. Example: ‘If I won the lottery, I would travel around the world.’ (But I probably won’t win.) ‘If I were you, I would study more.’ (But I’m not you.)
Third Conditional
If + past perfect, would have + past participle. Use: regrets or imaginary situations in the past. Example: ‘If I had studied harder, I would have passed the exam.’ (But I didn’t study, so I failed.) ‘If she had left earlier, she wouldn’t have missed the bus.’
Common Mistakes
Don’t use ‘would’ in the ‘if’ clause. Incorrect: ‘If I would have…’ Correct: ‘If I had…’
Exercises
Complete: 1- If I … (be) you, I … (accept) the offer. 2- If we … (leave) earlier, we … (arrive) on time. 3- If she … (know) the truth, she … (not be) angry.
