The Olympic Games are the world’s most important international sporting event. They bring together athletes from around the world to compete in various sports.
Ancient Olympics
The first Olympic Games were held in Olympia, Greece, in 776 BC. They were held every four years in honour of Zeus, the king of the Greek gods. Only free Greek men could participate. The games included running, wrestling, boxing, chariot racing, and pentathlon.
Modern Olympics
The modern Olympic Games were revived by Pierre de Coubertin in 1896 in Athens. Today, the Summer and Winter Olympics are held every four years, alternating every two years. The Olympic symbol has five rings representing the five continents. The motto is ‘Citius, Altius, Fortius’ (Faster, Higher, Stronger).
Algeria in the Olympics
Algeria has participated in the Olympics since 1964. Algerian athletes have won medals in athletics, boxing, judo, and swimming. Famous Algerian Olympians include Hassiba Boulmerka (gold in 1500m, 1992) and Noureddine Morceli (gold in 1500m, 1996).
