Reported Speech
Introduction
We use reported speech to tell someone what another person said.
Rules
1. Remove quotation marks.
2. Change the tense: present → past, will → would, can → could.
3. Change pronouns: I → he/she, my → his/her.
4. Change time expressions: now → then, today → that day, tomorrow → the next day.
Examples
Direct: “I am tired,” she said.
Reported: She said that she was tired.
Direct: “I will come tomorrow,” he said.
Reported: He said that he would come the next day.
Exercises
Report these sentences:
1. “I like pizza,” she said. → ___
2. “We are studying,” they said. → ___
3. “I can swim,” he said. → ___
