American literature reflects the diversity and history of the United States. This lesson covers major American authors.
I. Ernest Hemingway (1899-1961)
Major works: The Old Man and the Sea, A Farewell to Arms, For Whom the Bell Tolls, The Sun Also Rises.
Style: Iceberg theory (minimalist prose), simple sentences, dialogue.
Themes: courage, war, loss, masculinity, nature.
II. F. Scott Fitzgerald (1896-1940)
Major work: The Great Gatsby. Also: Tender Is the Night, This Side of Paradise.
Themes: the American Dream, wealth, love, class, the Jazz Age.
The Great Gatsby critiques the materialism and moral decay of 1920s America.
III. Toni Morrison (1931-2019)
Major works: Beloved, Song of Solomon, The Bluest Eye.
Themes: African American experience, slavery, identity, memory, community.
Nobel Prize in Literature (1993).
IV. Exercises
1. What is the American Dream? How does Fitzgerald critique it?
