A descriptive essay paints a picture with words, describing a person, place, object, or experience in vivid detail.
I. Structure
1. Introduction: Hook + general description + thesis statement.
2. Body paragraphs: Each paragraph describes a different aspect (sight, sound, smell, touch, taste).
3. Conclusion: Summary + final impression.
II. Useful Language
Sensory words: vibrant, dazzling, fragrant, melodic, rough, smooth, bitter, sweet.
Comparative language: like, as if, resembles, similar to.
Adjectives: enormous, tiny, ancient, modern, bustling, peaceful, magnificent.
III. Example (Descriptive paragraph)
“The old library was a sanctuary of silence. Sunlight streamed through tall windows, illuminating dancing dust particles. The scent of aged paper and wood polish filled the air. Rows of leather-bound books lined the walls like silent sentinels of knowledge.”
IV. Exercise
Write a descriptive essay (200 words) about your favourite place. Use sensory details.
