Vocabulary: Describing People (Appearance and Personality)
Knowing how to describe people is an important skill in English. It helps us talk about others and understand descriptions in texts. We can describe physical appearance and personality.
Describing Physical Appearance
Height : tall, short, medium height, average height.
Build : slim, thin, plump, well-built, athletic.
Hair : long, short, curly, straight, wavy, bald, blonde, brunette, red.
Eyes : blue, brown, green, black, big, small.
Face : round, oval, square, wrinkled, freckled.
Age : young, old, middle-aged, teenager, elderly.
Example : “My mother is a middle-aged woman. She has long, curly brown hair and green eyes. She is of medium height and slim.”
Describing Personality
Positive traits : friendly, kind, generous, hardworking, honest, funny, cheerful, helpful, brave, polite.
Negative traits : lazy, rude, dishonest, mean, selfish, impatient, shy, grumpy.
Example : “My best friend is very friendly and cheerful. He is always helpful and never selfish.”
Comparative Descriptions
My brother is taller than me.
She is more patient than her sister.
He is the funniest person I know.
