Conditionals: Type 2 and Type 3
Type 2 and Type 3 conditionals express unreal or hypothetical situations. Type 2 refers to present/future unreal situations. Type 3 refers to past unreal situations.
1. Type 2 Conditional (Unreal Present/Future)
Structure: If + past simple, would/could/might + base verb.
Use: For imaginary or unlikely situations in the present or future. Example: “If I had a million dollars, I would travel the world.” (But I don’t have a million dollars). “If I were you, I would accept the offer.” (Were is used for all subjects in Type 2).
2. Type 3 Conditional (Unreal Past)
Structure: If + past perfect, would/could/might + have + past participle.
Use: For impossible past situations – we imagine a different past. Example: “If I had studied harder, I would have passed the exam.” (But I didn’t study, and I didn’t pass). Expresses regret or criticism about the past.
3. Mixed Conditionals
If clause (past) + Main clause (present): “If I had studied medicine, I would be a doctor now.” (Past condition affecting present). If clause (present/general) + Main clause (past): “If I were more careful, I wouldn’t have made that mistake.”
4. Common Mistakes
Using “would” in the if-clause: “If I would have” → “If I had”. Wrong tense in Type 3: “If I would have studied” → “If I had studied”. Forgetting the modal in the result: “I would gone” → “I would have gone”.
5. Examples
Type 2: “If she knew the truth, she would be happy.”
Type 2: “If I could fly, I would visit every country.”
Type 3: “If we had left earlier, we wouldn’t have missed the train.”
Type 3: “If you had told me, I could have helped.”
Mixed: “If I had taken that job, I would live in London now.”
Exercices

2. Complete Type 3: If she ___ (study), she ___ (pass).
3. What would you do if you won the lottery? (Type 2)
