Articles: A, An, The
Articles are words that define a noun as specific or unspecific. English has two types of articles: indefinite (a/an) and definite (the). The choice depends on whether the noun is countable/uncountable, singular/plural, specific/general, and mentioned for the first time or already known.
Indefinite Article: A / An
- A: before consonant sounds. a book, a university (yoo-ni-ver-si-ty), a European country.
- An: before vowel sounds. an apple, an hour (silent h), an honest person.
- Use: for singular countable nouns mentioned for the first time. “I saw a dog.” “She is a teacher.” “A cat is an animal.”
- Use: with professions, nationalities, and religions. “He is a doctor.” “She is an Algerian.”
- Use: in exclamations with “what”. “What a beautiful day!”
Definite Article: The
- Use: when the noun is specific or already known. “I saw a dog. The dog was black.” (second mention).
- Use: when there is only one. “The sun, the moon, the president.”
- Use: with superlatives. “She is the best student.”
- Use: with ordinal numbers. “The first chapter.”
- Use: with names of rivers, seas, oceans, deserts, mountain ranges. “the Sahara, the Mediterranean, the Alps.”
- Use: with countries that are plural or contain “kingdom/republic”. “the United States, the United Kingdom, the Netherlands.”
Zero Article (No Article)
- Plural countable nouns used generally: “Dogs are loyal animals.” (not “The dogs”).
- Uncountable nouns used generally: “Water is essential.” “Love is beautiful.”
- Proper nouns (names): “I live in Algeria. He is called Ahmed.”
- Meals: “I had breakfast at 8 AM.” “Lunch is ready.”
- Sports and games: “I play football.” “She likes chess.”
- Subjects: “I study mathematics.” “History is interesting.”
- Transport: “I go by bus.” “She travels by train.”
