Past Continuous Tense

The past continuous describes an action in progress at a specific time in the past.

Formation

Subject + was/were + verb-ing
Examples: I was reading. They were playing.

Uses

• Action in progress at a specific past time: At 8 pm last night, I was watching TV.
• Interrupted action: I was having a shower when the phone rang.
• Two simultaneous actions: While I was cooking, my sister was studying.

Negative and Questions

Negative: Subject + wasn’t/weren’t + verb-ing
Question: Was/Were + subject + verb-ing?
Examples: I wasn’t sleeping. Were you listening?

Exercise

1. Complete: Yesterday at 6 pm, I ___ (eat) dinner.
2. Combine: (I / read) when (the phone / ring)
