Future Tense: Will vs Going To

Both “will” and “going to” express the future, but they are used differently.

Will

Structure: will + base verb
Uses:

• Predictions: It will rain tomorrow.
• Spontaneous decisions: I’ll help you with that.
• Promises: I will call you later.

Going To

Structure: am/is/are + going to + base verb
Uses:

• Planned intentions: I am going to visit my grandmother.
• Predictions based on evidence: Look at those clouds! It’s going to rain.

Comparison

Will	Going to
Instant decision: “I’ll answer the phone!”	Plan: “I’m going to study medicine.”
Prediction: “I think it will be sunny.”	Evidence: “It’s going to rain.”

Exercises

1. Choose: (I think it ___ rain / is going to rain) – I see dark clouds.
2. Complete: I ___ (visit) my grandmother next weekend. (plan)
