Modal Verbs (Must, Have to, Should, Ought to)

Modal verbs are auxiliary verbs that express necessity, obligation, advice, and prohibition. They are essential for expressing attitudes and opinions in English.

I. Expressing Obligation and Necessity

Modal	Use	Example
Must	Strong obligation / necessity from speaker	“You must wear a seatbelt.”
Have to	External obligation	“I have to finish this project by Friday.”
Must not (Mustnt)	Prohibition	“You mustnt smoke here.”
Dont have to	No obligation	“You dont have to come if youre busy.”

II. Expressing Advice

Should / Ought to: Used for giving advice and recommendations.

“You should study harder for the exam.”

“You ought to see a doctor.”

Shouldnt: Used for negative advice.

“You shouldnt eat too much sugar.”

III. Difference Between Must and Have to

Must: Expresses internal obligation (the speakers authority). “I must call my mother.” (I feel its necessary)

Have to: Expresses external obligation (rules, laws, circumstances). “I have to wear a uniform at work.” (its a rule)

IV. Past Forms

Had to: Past of must/have to. “I had to wake up early yesterday.”

Should have + past participle: Past advice (regret). “You should have told me earlier.”

Exercises

1. Complete with must, have to, should: “You ___ respect your parents.”, “I ___ go now or I will miss the bus.”

2. Rewrite using modals: “It is necessary for students to do their homework.”
