Expressing Obligation: Must, Have to, Should
These modal verbs express different levels of obligation and advice.
Must (strong obligation):
- You must wear a seatbelt.
- Students must arrive on time.
- Negative: mustn’t (prohibition): You mustn’t smoke here.
Have to (external obligation):
- I have to do my homework.
- She has to wear a uniform at school.
- Negative: don’t have to (no obligation): You don’t have to come.
Should (advice):
- You should eat healthy food.
- He should study more.
- Negative: shouldn’t: You shouldn’t stay up late.
Exercises:
Exercise 1: Complete with must, have to, or should:
1. You … brush your teeth twice a day. (should)
2. I … finish my project by Friday. (have to)
3. You … cheat in exams. (mustn’t)
