Past Continuous: Formation, Usage and Exercises
The Past Continuous describes actions in progress at a specific time in the past.
1. Formation
Subject + was/were + verb-ing. I was reading. They were playing.
2. Uses
- Action in progress at a past time: At 8 pm, I was studying.
- Interrupted action: I was sleeping when the phone rang.
- Two simultaneous actions: While I was cooking, he was watching TV.
3. Negative and Questions
Negative: Subject + wasn’t/weren’t + verb-ing. She wasn’t sleeping.
Questions: Was/Were + subject + verb-ing? Were you listening?
4. Exercises
- Yesterday at 6 pm, I (watch) TV.
- They (not/play) when I arrived.
- What _____ you (do) at 9 pm?
