Simple Past: Regular and Irregular Verbs
The Simple Past is used to describe completed actions in the past.
1. Regular verbs
Add -ed to the base form: play → played, work → worked, study → studied.
2. Spelling rules for regular verbs
- Verbs ending in -e: add -d: like → liked.
- Verbs ending in consonant + y: change -y to -ied: study → studied.
- Short verbs (CVC): double consonant: stop → stopped.
3. Irregular verbs
Many common verbs are irregular. Examples: go → went, eat → ate, see → saw, buy → bought, take → took, write → wrote, read → read, come → came.
4. Negative and questions
Negative: Subject + did not (didn’t) + base verb. I didn’t go.
Questions: Did + subject + base verb? Did you see the movie?
