Passive Voice with Modals: Structures and Examples
The passive voice with modal verbs is an advanced structure used in formal writing and the BAC exam.
Formation
Subject + modal + be + past participle: “The work must be finished today.”
Examples
- Can: “This can be done easily.”
- Must: “The rules must be respected.”
- Should: “The environment should be protected.”
- May/Might: “The meeting may be postponed.”
- Have to: “The report has to be submitted.”
Past Passive with Modals
Subject + modal + have been + past participle: “The letter should have been sent yesterday.”
