The Past Simple Tense
The Past Simple is used to talk about completed actions in the past. It is essential for narratives and storytelling.
Uses
- Completed actions: I visited Paris last year.
- Past habits: When I was young, I played football every day.
- Sequence of events: He entered the room, sat down, and started reading.
- With time expressions: yesterday, last week, in 2020, two days ago.
Regular Verbs
Add -ed to the base form: work → worked, play → played, study → studied.
Spelling rules: stop → stopped (double consonant), love → loved (just +d), study → studied (y → ied).
Irregular Verbs
Each has its own form: go → went, eat → ate, drink → drank, speak → spoke, write → wrote, buy → bought, catch → caught, teach → taught.
Exercises
- Put verbs in Past Simple: (He … (go) to London – She … (not/eat) breakfast – … you … (see) the film?).
- Complete the table: (begin-began-?, break-?-broken, ?-chosen-?).
- Write a short paragraph about what you did yesterday.
