Making Suggestions: Let’s, Why don’t we, How about

There are several ways to make suggestions in English, from formal to informal.

Informal Suggestions

• Let’s + verb: “Let’s go to the cinema.”
• Why don’t we + verb: “Why don’t we watch a film?”
• How about + gerund: “How about watching a film?”
• What about + gerund: “What about having dinner?”

Formal Suggestions

• I suggest/recommend + gerund: “I suggest visiting the museum.”
• We could + verb: “We could try the new restaurant.”

Responding to Suggestions

• Accepting: “That’s a good idea. / Great idea! / Sounds good.”
• Declining: “I’m not sure. / Maybe another time. / I’d rather not.”

Exercises

1. Make a suggestion: “What should we do today?”
2. Respond: “Let’s go swimming.” (accept).
3. Respond: “Why don’t we eat out?” (decline politely).
