Double Negatives: Common Mistakes and How to Avoid Them
A double negative occurs when two negative words are used in the same sentence. In standard English, this creates a positive meaning (or is considered incorrect). Understanding double negatives will help you avoid common mistakes in writing and speaking.
What is a Double Negative?
A double negative happens when you use two negative words together in the same clause. In standard English, two negatives cancel each other and make a positive statement.
- Incorrect: I don’t have no money. (The negatives “don’t” and “no” cancel each other, meaning “I have money”)
- Correct: I don’t have any money. OR I have no money.

5. “Hardly no” → “Hardly any”
- Incorrect: There is hardly no water left.

When Double Negatives are Acceptable
Sometimes, double negatives are used intentionally to create a positive meaning (litotes) or for rhetorical effect. This is more common in literature and formal writing.
- She is not unhappy. (meaning: she is happy)
- He is not unkind. (meaning: he is kind)
- It is not impossible. (meaning: it is possible)
In songs and informal speech, double negatives are sometimes used for emphasis, but you should avoid them in academic writing and formal communication.
Exercises
Exercise 1: Correct the double negatives in the following sentences:
- I don’t need no help with my homework.
- She didn’t say nothing about the party.
- Nobody didn’t come to the football match.
- We haven’t got no bread at home.
- He never goes nowhere on weekends.
Exercise 2: Rewrite these sentences in two ways (using “not…any” and “no…”) :
- I don’t have no time. → ________________________________ / ________________________________
- There isn’t no milk in the fridge. → ________________________________ / ________________________________
- She doesn’t want no help. → ________________________________ / ________________________________
Exercise 3: Choose the correct option:
- I (don’t have / have) nothing to do today.
- There (isn’t / is) no one in the classroom.
- She (didn’t say / said) anything about the test.
- I (can’t / can) find my keys nowhere.
- Nobody (didn’t come / came) to the meeting.
Conclusion
In standard English, two negatives make a positive. To avoid mistakes, use either a negative verb with “any” words (anybody, anything, anywhere) OR a positive verb with “no” words (nobody, nothing, nowhere). Practice this rule until it becomes natural!
