Taking Notes and Summarizing: Key Skills for BAC
Taking notes and summarizing are essential skills for the BAC exam. They help you understand texts better and prepare for written expression.
How to take effective notes:
- Listen/read actively and identify main ideas.
- Use keywords and short phrases, not full sentences.
- Use abbreviations and symbols (& for and, w/ for with, → for leads to).
- Organize information with headings and subheadings.
- Use mind maps for complex topics.
- Highlight key terms, dates, names, and statistics.
How to write a summary:
- Read the text carefully (at least twice).
- Identify the main idea (thesis) of each paragraph.
- Write in your own words (paraphrase).
- Keep the original structure and logical flow.
- Reduce the text to 1/3 or 1/4 of the original length.
- Do not add your own opinions or examples.
- Use linking words to connect ideas (however, therefore, in addition).
BAC Example 2023:
“Read the passage about climate change and write a summary in about 50 words.”
