Future with Will and Going To: Differences and Exercises
English has two main ways to express the future: will and going to. Will + base verb: used for predictions (It will rain tomorrow), spontaneous decisions (I will help you), promises (I will always love you), offers (I will carry that bag), and requests (Will you open the door?). Going to + base verb: used for planned intentions (I am going to study medicine) and predictions with evidence (Look at those clouds! It is going to rain). Formation of Will: Affirmative (I will/I will go), Negative (I will not/won’t go), Interrogative (Will you go?). Formation of Going to: Affirmative (I am going to go, He is going to go, They are going to go), Negative (I am not going to go), Interrogative (Are you going to go?). Difference: Will is for unplanned decisions and general predictions, Going to is for plans and predictions based on evidence. Examples: A: The phone is ringing. B: I will answer it. (spontaneous). She is going to visit her grandmother tomorrow. (plan). The economy will improve next year. (prediction).
