Expressing Regret: Wish and If Only

We use wish and if only to express regret.

Wish/If only + Past Simple

For a desire about the present. Example: I wish I knew the answer.

Wish/If only + Past Perfect

For regret about the past. Example: I wish I had studied.

Wish/If only + Would

For a wish for change. Example: I wish you would stop.

2. He can’t drive. (He wishes he could drive.)
3. I am not tall. (I wish I were taller.)
4. They won’t listen. (I wish they would listen.)
