Comparatives and Superlatives

Comparatives and superlatives are used to compare people, things, and places. In this lesson, we will learn how to form and use them correctly.

1. Comparative Adjectives

We use comparatives to compare two people or things. Structure: Subject + verb + comparative adjective + than + object

Examples — Comparatives

  • Ahmed is taller than his brother.
  • My house is bigger than your house.
  • This book is more interesting than that one.
  • Maths is easier than physics.
  • She is happier than her friend.

2. Superlative Adjectives

We use superlatives to compare one person/thing with many others. Structure: Subject + verb + the + superlative adjective + (noun) + (in/of group)

3. Irregular Comparatives and Superlatives

  • Your grade is better than mine.

4. Key Phrases with Comparatives and Superlatives

  • as…as (equal comparison): He is as tall as his father.
  • not as…as: This book is not as interesting as that one.
  • one of the + superlative + plural noun: It is one of the most beautiful cities.
  • the + comparative, the + comparative: The more you study, the better your results.
