Introduction

In this lesson, we will learn how to make predictions about the future using will and won’t – will not. This is an important grammar skill for expressing future events, forecasts, and promises.

1. When Do We Use “Will”?

We use will to:

  • Make predictions about the future based on opinion not evidence: I think it will rain tomorrow.
  • Express promises: I will help you with your homework.
  • Make spontaneous decisions made at the moment of speaking: The phone is ringing. I will answer it.
  • Make offers and requests: I will carry your bag for you. Will you open the door please?

2. Form of “Will”

Affirmative Form

Subject + will + base verb

Subject Will Base Verb Example
I / You / He / She / It / We / They will play She will play tennis tomorrow.
Contracted form: I’ll, you’ll, he’ll, she’ll, it’ll, we’ll, they’ll

Negative Form

Subject + will not + won’t + base verb

Subject Will not / Won’t Base Verb Example
I / You / He / She / It / We / They will not / won’t come He won’t come to the party.

Question Form

Will + subject + base verb + ?

Will Subject Base Verb Example
Will you come Will you come to my birthday?
Will it rain Will it rain tomorrow?

Short Answers

  • Yes, I will. / No, I won’t.
  • Yes, she will. / No, she won’t.

3. Examples of Predictions

  • I think it will be sunny tomorrow.
  • Scientists say the temperature will rise in the next 50 years.
  • In the future people will live on Mars.
  • I don’t think it will rain today.
  • He won’t pass the exam if he doesn’t study.
  • Robots will replace many jobs in the future.

4. Will vs. Going to

Will Going to
Predictions based on opinion: I think it will rain. Predictions based on evidence: Look at those clouds! It is going to rain.
Spontaneous decisions: I will help you. Plans and intentions: I am going to study medicine.
Promises and offers: I will call you later. Planned arrangements: We are going to visit our grandparents.
