The First Conditional (also called If Clause Type 1) is used to talk about real and possible situations in the present or future. In this lesson, we will learn how to form and use the first conditional with clear examples and practice exercises for 3rd Year Middle School students.
1. What is the First Conditional?
We use the first conditional to talk about something that is possible and likely to happen in the future. The condition is real and has a reasonable chance of being fulfilled.
2. Structure
If + Subject + Simple Present, Subject + will + base verb
Examples:
- If it rains, I will take an umbrella.
- If you study hard, you will pass the exam.
- If she arrives early, we will start the meeting.
- If they invite me, I will go to the party.
3. Important Notes
- The if clause can come at the beginning or end of the sentence.
If you work hard, you will succeed. = You will succeed if you work hard. - When the if clause comes first, we put a comma after it.
- We can use unless instead of if… not.
Unless you hurry, you will miss the bus. (= If you do not hurry…) - We can also use modals (can, must, should, may) in the main clause:
If you finish your homework, you can watch TV.
If you feel sick, you should see a doctor.
4. Practice Exercises
Exercise 1: Complete the sentences with the correct form of the verb in brackets.
- If it ________ (be) sunny, we ________ (go) to the beach.
- If you ________ (not eat) breakfast, you ________ (feel) hungry.
- She ________ (be) happy if she ________ (get) a good mark.
- If they ________ (arrive) late, the teacher ________ (be) angry.
- We ________ (not go) out if it ________ (rain).
Exercise 2: Match the if-clauses with the main clauses.
1. If you heat ice, a. I will call you.
2. If I need help, b. it melts.
3. If she practises, c. you will feel better.
4. If you take this medicine, d. she will improve.
5. If we save money, e. we will buy a new car.
5. Home Activity
Write 5 first conditional sentences about your future plans. Use different verbs in each sentence. Example: “If I study well this year, I will get my BEM certificate with honours.”
