What are Modal Verbs?
Modal verbs are auxiliary verbs that modify the meaning of the main verb. They do not change form (no -s in the third person) and are followed by the base form of the verb (without to).
1. Can / Can’t (Ability and Permission):
- Used for ability: I can swim. (أستطيع السباحة)
- Used for permission: Can I go out? (هل يمكنني الخروج؟)
- Negative: cannot (can’t) — She can’t speak Chinese.
- Question: Can you help me? Yes, I can. / No, I can’t.
2. Must / Mustn’t (Obligation and Prohibition):
- Used for strong obligation: You must wear a seatbelt. (يجب عليك)
- Negative (mustn’t) expresses prohibition: You mustn’t smoke here. (ممنوع)
- Question: Must I finish this today? Yes, you must. / No, you needn’t.
3. Should / Shouldn’t (Advice and Recommendation):
- Used for giving advice: You should drink more water. (ينبغي أن)
- Negative: You shouldn’t eat too much sugar.
- Question: Should I call the doctor?
4. May (Permission and Possibility):
- Used for formal permission: May I come in? (هل يُسمح لي؟)
- Used for possibility: It may rain tomorrow. (ربما)
- Negative: may not — He may not come to the party.
