1. The Comparative Form

We use the comparative to compare two people, things, or groups.

Type of Adjective Comparative Rule Example
One syllable (short) adjective + -er + than tall → taller than
One syllable ending in CVC double last letter + -er + than big → bigger than
Two syllables ending in -y change -y to –ier + than happy → happier than
Two or more syllables more + adjective + than beautiful → more beautiful than

2. The Superlative Form

We use the superlative to compare three or more items, showing the highest degree.

Type of Adjective Superlative Rule Example
One syllable the + adjective + -est tall → the tallest
One syllable ending in CVC the + double last letter + -est big → the biggest
Two syllables ending in -y the + -iest happy → the happiest
Two or more syllables the most + adjective beautiful → the most beautiful

3. Irregular Forms

Adjective Comparative Superlative
good better than the best
bad worse than the worst
far farther / further than the farthest / furthest
little less than the least

Examples

Comparative: Ahmed is taller than his brother. / This book is more interesting than that one.

Superlative: Mount Everest is the highest mountain in the world. / She is the most intelligent student in the class.

  1. Write the comparative form: fast → ____, expensive → ____, heavy → ____.
  2. Write the superlative form: old → ____, beautiful → ____, good → ____.
  3. Complete: My house is _____ (big) than yours. This is _____ (bad) movie I have ever seen.
  4. Correct the mistake: She is the most clever student in the class.
