The Present Perfect: Formation and Uses
The present perfect connects the past and the present.
Formation
Subject + have/has + past participle
- I/You/We/They: have + past participle. “I have finished.”
- He/She/It: has + past participle. “She has arrived.”
Uses
- Life experiences: “I have visited London.” (no specific time)
- Past action with present result: “He has broken his leg.” (it is still broken)
- Unfinished actions: “I have lived here for 10 years.” (I still live here)
- With ever/never: “Have you ever been to Paris?” “I have never seen that film.”
Signal words
already, yet, just, ever, never, for, since, so far, recently.
Difference Past Simple vs Present Perfect
- Past Simple: specific time. “I visited Paris last year.”
- Present Perfect: no specific time. “I have visited Paris.”
Exercises

2) Choose: I (visited/have visited) my grandmother yesterday. I (lived/have lived) here since 2010.
