Reported Speech: Statements
Reported speech is used to tell someone what another person said.
Direct vs Reported Speech
| Direct Speech | Reported Speech |

| “I am happy,” he said. | He said that he was happy. |
| “I live in Algiers,” she said. | She said that she lived in Algiers. |
| “I will help you,” he promised. | He promised that he would help me. |
| “I have finished,” she said. | She said that she had finished. |
Tense Changes
- Present simple → Past simple: “I eat” → He said he ate
- Present continuous → Past continuous: “I am eating” → He said he was eating
- Past simple → Past perfect: “I ate” → He said he had eaten
- Present perfect → Past perfect: “I have eaten” → He said he had eaten
- Will → Would: “I will come” → He said he would come
- Can → Could: “I can swim” → He said he could swim
- Must → Had to: “I must go” → He said he had to go
Other changes
- now → then, today → that day, tomorrow → the next day, yesterday → the day before
- here → there, this → that, these → those
