Expressing Obligation

Different modal verbs express different degrees of obligation, from strong (must) to weak (should).

Must vs Have to

Must: strong obligation from the speaker’s perspective. You must wear a seatbelt. Have to: external obligation. I have to wear a uniform at work. In the past: had to (I had to study yesterday). In negative: mustn’t (prohibition) vs don’t have to (no obligation).

Should / Ought to

Advice or weak obligation. You should see a doctor. He ought to apologize.

Exercises

1. Fill: (You … stop at a red light – You … eat too much sugar – I … finish this report yesterday).
2. Choose must or have to.
3. Write sentences giving advice using should.
