English – Reported Questions and Commands – BAC Literary Stream
Reported speech (also called indirect speech) is used to report what someone said without using their exact words. After mastering reported statements, you need to learn reported questions and commands for the BAC exam.
Reported Questions:
When reporting questions, the word order changes from question form to statement form, and the tense shifts back.
- Wh- questions: Keep the question word. “Where do you live?” → He asked me where I lived.
- Yes/No questions: Use ‘if’ or ‘whether’. “Do you like coffee?” → She asked me if/whether I liked coffee.
Tense Changes in Reported Questions:
- Present Simple → Past Simple: “Do you study?” → He asked if I studied.
- Present Continuous → Past Continuous: “Are you working?” → She asked if I was working.
- Past Simple → Past Perfect: “Did you see him?” → He asked if I had seen him.
- Will → Would: “Will you come?” → She asked if I would come.
- Can → Could: “Can you help?” → He asked if I could help.
- Must → Had to: “Must I go?” → She asked if she had to go.
Reported Commands and Requests:
Use: tell/ask/order/advise + person + to + infinitive
- Positive command: “Sit down!” → He told me to sit down.
- Negative command: “Don’t touch that!” → She told me not to touch that.
- Polite request: “Please close the window.” → She asked me to close the window.
- Advice: “You should see a doctor.” → He advised me to see a doctor.
- Order: “Leave immediately!” → The officer ordered them to leave immediately.
Reporting Verbs:
- Statements: say, tell, explain, mention, announce, claim, state
- Questions: ask, wonder, want to know, inquire
- Commands/Requests: tell, ask, order, command, advise, warn, remind, encourage, forbid, invite
- Suggestions: suggest, recommend, propose (+ gerund or that clause)
BAC Exercise:
Report the following:
1. “Where are you going?” he asked. → He asked ________.
2. “Do you speak English?” she asked. → She asked ________.
3. “Close the door!” the teacher said. → The teacher told ________.
4. “Don’t be late,” she said. → She told ________.
5. “Will you help me?” he asked. → He asked ________.
Answers: 1. where I was going, 2. if I spoke English, 3. me to close the door, 4. me not to be late, 5. if I would help him
