English – The Causative: Have/Get Something Done – BAC Literary Stream
The causative structure is used to indicate that someone arranges for another person to do something for them. It’s a useful structure for the BAC exam, especially in writing tasks.
Structure: Have/Get + Something + Past Participle
- “I had my hair cut yesterday.” (I didn’t cut it myself; the barber did it)
- “She got her car repaired.” (she paid someone to repair it)
- “We are having our house painted.” (workers are painting it)
Have vs Get in Causative:
- Have something done: More formal. “I had my teeth checked.”
- Get something done: More informal. “I got my phone fixed.”
Tenses in Causative:
- Present Simple: “I have my car serviced every year.”
- Present Continuous: “I am having my room painted.”
- Past Simple: “She had her dress made by a designer.”
- Future: “I will have my hair done for the wedding.”
- Present Perfect: “He has had his application processed.”
- Modal: “You should have your eyes tested.”
Causative with ‘Make’ and ‘Have’ (Different Meaning):
- Make + person + verb: Force someone to do something. “The teacher made us rewrite the essay.”
- Have + person + verb: Ask/arrange for someone to do something. “I had the mechanic check the brakes.”
- Get + person + to + verb: Persuade someone. “I got my friend to help me.”
BAC Exercise:
Rewrite the sentences using the causative form:
1. A professional photographer took our wedding photos. → We ________.
2. The dentist checks my teeth every six months. → I ________.
3. Someone is painting her house. → She ________.
4. The mechanic will fix my car tomorrow. → I ________.
5. A tailor made his suit. → He ________.
Answers: 1. had our wedding photos taken (by a professional photographer), 2. have my teeth checked every six months, 3. is having her house painted, 4. will have my car fixed tomorrow, 5. had his suit made
