English — Wish and If Only: Expressing Regret and Desires — 3rd Year — Literary Stream
Wish and ‘If only’ are used to express desires, regrets, and wishes about situations that are unreal or unlikely.
Wish + Past Simple (Present Unreal)
Expresses a desire for a present situation to be different. “I wish I had more money.” (But I don’t have much money.) “I wish I knew the answer.” (But I don’t know.)
Wish + Past Perfect (Past Regret)
Expresses regret about a past action. “I wish I had studied harder.” (But I didn’t study hard.) “She wishes she hadn’t said that.” (But she said it.)
Wish + Would (Future Desire/Complaint)
Expresses a desire for someone to change their behavior. “I wish you would stop smoking.” “I wish it would stop raining.”
If Only
More emphatic than ‘wish’. Same rules. “If only I had known!” “If only she were here!”
Exercises BAC
Exercise 1 (BAC 2021): Complete: “I wish I (can) fly.” Solution: “I wish I could fly.”
Exercise 2 (BAC 2022): “I didn’t study. I regret it.” → “I wish I had studied.” / “If only I had studied.”
Exercise 3: “The neighbors are too noisy.” → “I wish they would be quieter.”
Summary
Wish + past simple = present unreal. Wish + past perfect = past regret. Wish + would = future desire/complaint. ‘If only’ is more emphatic.
