English — Countable and Uncountable Nouns: Quantifiers (Some, Any, Much, Many) — 1st Year — Literary Stream

Countable nouns have singular and plural forms (book/books). Uncountable nouns have only one form (water, information, advice). Different quantifiers are used with each type.

Quantifiers for Countable Nouns

many, few, a few, several, a number of, each, every. Examples: “How many books do you have?” “A few students passed the exam.” “Several people attended the meeting.”

Quantifiers for Uncountable Nouns

much, little, a little, a bit of, a great deal of. Examples: “How much water do you drink?” “A little patience is needed.”

Quantifiers for Both

some, any, no, enough, plenty of, a lot of, lots of, all. Examples: “I have some money.” “Do you have any questions?” “There is enough food for everyone.”

Exercises BAC

Exercise 1: Choose the correct quantifier: “How (much/many) time do we have?” Solution: much (time is uncountable).

Exercise 2 (BAC 2021): “There are (much/many) students in the classroom.” Solution: many.

Exercise 3: “I don’t have (some/any) money.” Solution: any.

Summary

Use many/few for countable nouns, much/little for uncountable nouns. Use some in affirmative, any in negative/questions. This rule is tested in BAC grammar sections.
