English — Countable and Uncountable Nouns (Some, Any, No) — Grammar Rules and Exercises — 2nd Year Middle School — Algerian Curriculum

In English, nouns can be countable or uncountable. This is an important grammar topic because it affects the words we use before nouns, such as some, any, no, a/an, and much/many. This lesson is designed for 2nd Year Middle School students.

1. Countable Nouns

Countable nouns are things we can count. They have both singular and plural forms.

  • Singular: a book, an apple, one pen, a chair
  • Plural: books, apples, two pens, chairs

Examples: I have two books in my bag. She bought an apple from the shop. There are many students in the class.

2. Uncountable Nouns

Uncountable nouns are things we cannot count. They usually have only one form (no plural). We cannot use a/an with them.

Common uncountable nouns:

  • Liquids: water, milk, juice, oil, coffee, tea
  • Foods: rice, bread, sugar, salt, cheese, meat, butter
  • Materials: wood, paper, glass, gold, iron
  • Abstract ideas: information, music, homework, time, work, love, happiness
  • Others: air, weather, money, furniture, news, traffic

Examples: I need some water. She gave me good advice. The weather is nice today.

3. Using Some, Any, and No

Some

We use some in affirmative sentences with both countable plural and uncountable nouns.

  • There are some books on the table. (countable plural)

  • Can I have some bread, please?

Any

We use any in negative sentences and questions with both countable plural and uncountable nouns.

  • There aren’t any chairs in the room.
  • Do you have any homework?
  • I don’t have any money with me.

No

We use no in affirmative sentences to mean “not any” or “not a/an”.

  • There is no milk in the fridge. (= There isn’t any milk)
  • I have no time today. (= I don’t have any time)

4. Much, Many, A lot of

  • Much + uncountable nouns (usually in negatives and questions): I don’t have much money.
